Exosomes are naturally occurring particles that carry information between cells in living things, and in skincare they are used to support the skin’s own natural processes so it looks fresher, calmer and more radiant. They exist in plants, in animals and in people. The INKEY List uses plant-derived exosomes, sourced from Cica (Centella Asiatica), and every bottle of our Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex contains 3 million of them. They are approximately 300 times smaller than a pore, which is why they can be applied at home, from a bottle, with no needles and no appointment. The result: clinic worthy rejuvenated skin in 14 days*.
This guide covers what exosomes are, what they do for skin, how to use them, how they compare to the actives already in your routine, and which products are actually worth your money. It is written for anyone dealing with dullness, tired looking skin, early signs of aging, or a complexion that just will not glow no matter how many steps you add. Everything on this page is backed by clinical or in-vitro data, and we show you the data rather than asking you to take our word for it. If you want the wider context first, here is the story of how exosomes moved from clinic treatments to everyday skincare.

What are Exosomes?
Exosomes are tiny particles produced naturally by cells in plants, animals and people. In nature, their job is to carry information between cells. They are one of the ways living things move messages around internally, and they have been studied in biology and medicine for decades, long before anyone thought to put them in a serum. That is the background science, and it is genuinely interesting, but it is worth being precise about what it means for a bottle sitting on your bathroom shelf.
In skincare, plant-derived exosomes are applied topically to support the skin’s natural processes so skin looks fresher, calmer and more radiant. They work alongside your skin, supporting the natural renewal processes it already has. That distinction matters. This is not a product that overrides your skin or forces it into a new state. It is a product that gives your skin’s own everyday functioning a helping hand, and the visible results follow from there.
Size is the reason this is possible at home at all. Exosomes are approximately 300 times smaller than a pore. That extraordinary smallness is what allows INKEY’s plant-derived exosomes to be delivered topically, in a lightweight serum, with no needles, no numbing cream and no clinic visit. For most of the last decade, if you wanted exosomes in your skin, you booked an appointment. Now you can apply them on a Tuesday night in front of the bathroom mirror.
The Science Behind Exosomes
INKEY’s exosomes are plant-derived from Cica, better known by its botanical name Centella Asiatica. If that ingredient sounds familiar, it should. Cica has one of the longest clinical research histories of any botanical in skincare, with a well-established reputation for calming and comforting stressed skin. Cica exosomes take that heritage and concentrate it into a delivery format that skincare has not had access to until very recently.
In in-vitro testing, our Cica exosomes demonstrated a 55% reduction in visible signs of skin stress (redness, puffiness, visible irritation)and a 63% increase in skin renewal activity in 8 hours. The formula also helps support natural collagen production.
Cica exosomes do not work alone in the bottle. They sit in a formula built around four active ingredients at 1% each, and Cica exosomes sit alongside 1% Ectoin in our formula precisely because the two complement each other: one supporting visible rejuvenation, the other locking moisture in and reinforcing the barrier.

Types of Exosomes in Skincare
Not all exosomes are the same, and the source is the single most important thing to understand before you buy anything in this category.
| Type | Source | INKEY's Choice |
|---|---|---|
| Plant-derived (Cica) | Centella asiatica extract | Yes |
| Stem cell-derived | Human or animal stem cells | No |
| Synthetic / lab-grown | Engineered particles | No |
Plant-derived (Cica). Supports visible skin rejuvenation. Biocompatible and vegan, and increasingly the standard for at-home formulas.
Stem cell-derived. Clinic-grade regenerative therapy. Not suitable for at-home topical use.
Synthetic / lab-grown. An emerging category, not yet widely validated for topical skincare.
We chose plant derived exosomes for three reasons. They are clinically validated, with real in-vitro data behind them rather than borrowed enthusiasm from adjacent fields. They are biocompatible with all skin types, including sensitive skin, which is not something you can say about most breakthrough actives. And they are plant-derived and 100% vegan, which means nobody has to make an ethical trade-off to get the results.
Stem cell-derived exosomes belong in clinics, administered by professionals, in a regulated setting. We are not interested in blurring that line. Synthetic exosomes are an interesting category to watch, but “interesting to watch” is not the same as ready for your face, and we would rather wait than be first.
So that is what exosomes are. The more useful question is what they actually do once they are on your skin.
Benefits of Exosomes for Skin
There is a version of the exosomes skincare conversation that stays permanently theoretical, all promise and no proof. This section is the opposite. Every benefit below is paired with the data behind it, and where there is no data, we do not make the claim.
Skin Renewal & Rejuvenation
The headline finding is a 63% increase in skin renewal activity in 8 hours**. In the four-week clinical study, 100% saw more glowing skin, clinically proven. And the result people notice most: clinic worthy rejuvenated skin in 14 days*.
What does that look like day to day? Smoother looking texture, so makeup sits better and light bounces off skin rather than getting caught in it. A more even tone, particularly across the areas that tend to go patchy first, around the nose and along the jaw. And a general improvement in bounce, that quality of skin looking rested even when you are not. This is why a skin rejuvenation serum has become the step people add when their routine is technically complete but their complexion still looks flat.

Reduces Visible Signs of Skin Stress
Modern life shows up on your face with unhelpful accuracy. Pollution, blue light from screens you cannot avoid, four hours of sleep before a deadline, long-haul flights, seasonal changes, hormonal shifts. None of these are skincare problems exactly, but all of them become skincare problems eventually.
Our in-vitro testing showed a 55% reduction in visible signs of skin stress (redness, puffiness, visible irritation)*. In practice, that means the days when your skin looks like it has had a hard week look less like that. If you deal with visible rednessas a regular feature rather than an occasional event, this is the benefit that will matter most to you.
The best use cases are the predictable ones. Post-travel, when your face has spent six hours in recycled cabin air. Post-workout, when everything is flushed and blotchy. Post-late-night, when you can see the evening on your face before you have finished your coffee.
Intense, Long-Lasting Hydration
The Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex is proven to deliver up to 12-hours of hydration**, and that number comes from a separate clinical study of 31 people rather than being extrapolated from anything else.
Two supporting ingredients do the heavy lifting alongside the exosomes. 1% Hyaluronic Acid delivers multi-level hydration, using different molecular weights so moisture sits at the surface for immediate plumpness and reaches deeper for lasting comfort. 1% Ectoin supports the barrier and helps skin hold onto the moisture it has, which is the difference between hydration that lands and hydration that evaporates by lunchtime.
The visible result is what to focus on. Skin looks plumper. Fine lines from dehydrated skin look softer because the skin holding them is fuller. And there is no tight feeling by mid-afternoon, no urge to press a hand to your cheek to check whether it still feels like your face. Comfortable, all day, without reapplying anything.
If your barrier feels genuinely compromised, the Ectoin Hydro-Barrier Serum ($17) is the companion product worth adding.
Glow Boosting & Visible Firming
Firmness is the benefit people are most cynical about, and reasonably so. Our approach is to be specific about what is in the formula and what it has been shown to do.
1% Kollaren™, a clinically studied peptide, helps visibly improve firmness and skin structure. The formula also helps support natural collagen production. Alongside that sits 1% Kollaren™, a clinically studied peptide chosen precisely because peptide research is mature and well documented rather than speculative.
Where all of this lands is the 6-in-1 result: 6-in-1 skin rejuvenation: clinically proven to visibly improve radiance, hydration, tone, firmness, elasticity, and texture*. Six measurable improvements from one step, in four weeks. And critically, these are 6-in-1 skin rejuvenation results, without the irritation of traditional actives.
Suitable for All Skin Types
There is no adjustment period. No purge, no sensitivity phase, no building up frequency over six weeks. You start on day one at twice daily and stay there. The formula is fragrance-free, alcohol-free and paraben-free.
| Skin Type | Why Exosomes Work |
|---|---|
| Dry / Dehydrated | Multi-level hydration with up to 12 hours of moisture.** |
| Oily / Combination | Lightweight, non-comedogenic formula that hydrates without adding excess oil. |
| Sensitive | Plant-derived, clinically tested, and fragrance-free. |
| Mature | Helps support visible firmness with 6-in-1 skin rejuvenation benefits.* |
| Dull / Stressed | Clinically shown to reduce visible signs of skin stress by 55%*, for a fresher-looking complexion. |

Knowing what exosomes do is only half of it. Getting the results depends entirely on how and when you use them.
How to Use Exosomes
Exosomes go on first, straight after cleansing, before any other serum. The logic is simple: your exosome step lands on freshly cleansed skin with nothing in the way, and everything you layer on afterwards absorbs into skin that has already been prepped and hydrated. Put it further down the routine and you are asking it to push through a moisturizer.
The key rule: apply to damp skin. Not soaking, not dripping, just still slightly wet from cleansing or a mist. The hydrating complex absorbs noticeably better into damp skin, and hyaluronic acid in particular performs best when there is surface water available to work with. This one habit makes more difference than almost anything else you can change.
Step-by-Step Application Guide
Morning Routine
- Cleanse with a gentle cleanser.
- Apply Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex ($24), a pea-sized amount, to damp face and neck. Always before other serums.
- Layer targeted treatments such as 15% Vitamin C + EGF Serum ($20) or Niacinamide.
- Moisturizer.
- Finish with a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every morning, whatever the weather. Here is SPF and why it matters.
Evening Routine
- Double cleanse to remove SPF, makeup and the day.
- Weekly or as needed, apply an Exosome Boosting Dry Sheet Mask for 10 minutes.
- Apply Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex to damp skin.
- Layer actives such as Retinol or AHAs/BHAs.
- Night moisturizer.
How to Apply the Exosome Boosting Dry Sheet Mask
Wet your skin thoroughly with water or a face mist until you can see droplets sitting on the surface. Apply the sheet and smooth it into place. At the three minute mark, re-moisten the mask with a wet cotton pad or another mist. Remove at 10 minutes and massage the excess into skin rather than rinsing it away.
Your At-Home Exosome Facial
An exosome facial used to mean a clinic, a consultation and a three-figure invoice. Here is a version you can do tonight, in ten minutes, with things you can keep in a drawer. This is an exosome facial at home, and while we are not going to pretend it replaces a clinical procedure, it is a genuinely effective glow reset before an event or after a flight.
- Double cleanse. First an oil or balm to break down SPF and makeup, then a gentle second cleanse. Do not skip this. Everything after it works better on properly clean skin.
- Mist until skin is properly damp. You want visible droplets, not a light spritz. Water or a hydrating face mist both work.
- Apply the Exosome Boosting Dry Sheet Maskfor 10 minutes. $20 for a pack of three, worth $24. Smooth it flat, especially around the nose and jaw where sheets tend to lift.
- Re-mist at 3 minutes. Use a wet cotton pad or mist directly over the sheet. This keeps the mask working for the full ten.
- Remove and massage in the excess. Two minutes of upward massage. This is the part everyone skips and it is the part that makes your face look like you went somewhere.
- Apply Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex ($24) to damp skin. Pea-sized, face and neck.
- Seal with Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturizer($22). This locks the whole thing in and stops it evaporating off.
Ten minutes, start to finish. Do it the night before something that matters and you will see the difference in photographs. If you want the detail on how the dry sheet format actually works, we wrote a complete guide to the Exosome Hydrating Masks.
INKEY Tip: Always use the mask before the serum, never after. The mask preps and the serum seals in the benefit. Reversing the order wastes both.
INKEY Tip: A travel-sized hydrating mist is the best thing you can pack for a long flight. It energizes tired looking skin mid-flight and gives you the damp base you need to apply your serum the moment you land.
Morning vs Evening Use
| Morning | Evening | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary benefit | Instant glow base with a dewy finish under makeup | Supports overnight recovery from daily skin stress |
| Key tip | Apply to damp skin, then follow with SPF | Pair with the Exosome Boosting Dry Sheet Mask weekly for an intensified result |
| Result | Radiant, plump-looking skin throughout the day | Wake up to visibly smoother, fresher-looking skin |
How Much to Use
A pea-sized amount covers your entire face and neck. The formula is concentrated, and more product does not mean more result, it means a slower absorbing layer that pills under makeup. Smooth it across skin and press it in with your palms. Do not rub, and do not drag, particularly around the eyes.
With the routine settled, the obvious next question is how exosomes stack up against the actives already sitting on your shelf.
Exosomes vs Other Ingredients
The most common question we get is not “do exosomes work” but “do exosomes replace what I already use”. Almost always, the honest answer is no. Exosomes are additive. They make routines better rather than making other steps redundant, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a replacement you did not need.
Exosomes vs Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. It draws moisture into skin and holds it there, which produces immediate, visible plumping. You can see it working within minutes, and that instant gratification is exactly why it has been a routine staple for years.
Exosomes operate on a different timescale and toward a different outcome. They support the skin’s natural renewal processes so skin looks fresher and more rejuvenated over time. One delivers immediate plumpness. The other builds visible rejuvenation with consistent use. Neither substitutes for the other, and the difference is not quality, it is timing and purpose.
The good news is that this is not a decision you need to make. They work together, and the Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex already contains 1% Hyaluronic Acid, so you get the immediate plumping and the longer arc from a single step. If you want a dedicated dose on top, the Hyaluronic Acid Serum ($13) layers underneath beautifully.
Exosomes vs Retinol
Retinol is the long-standing gold standard for smoothing the look of fine lines and improving texture, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It has decades of research behind it. It also has a well-known trade-off: irritation, sensitivity, flaking and an adjustment period that can run for weeks before your skin settles.
Exosomes reach some similar visible outcomes, specifically skin renewal and improved firmness, through a completely different route. There is no irritation and no adjustment phase. You do not build up tolerance, you do not alternate nights, and you do not have to plan your social calendar around a flaky patch.
Used together, exosomes support retinol results while helping keep skin comfortable through the process. That is the genuinely useful takeaway: this is not a choice between them, it is a way of making retinol easier to stick with. If you are layering, what not to mix with retinol is worth five minutes of your time.
Exosomes vs PDRN
Both exosomes and PDRN are next-generation glow ingredients that arrived in skincare from clinical settings, and they are frequently mentioned in the same breath. PDRN is best known for skin renewal and an instant glass-glow finish. Exosomes are known for 6-in-1 visible rejuvenation and hydration.
They are complementary rather than competing, and plenty of people use both. Our PDRN Serum ($18) is the focused renewal step, while the Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex ($24) covers six visible improvements in one. If you want the full breakdown, read PDRN vs Exosomes, or start with PDRN explained.
Comparison Table
| Ingredient | What it Does | Use with Exosomes? |
|---|---|---|
| Exosomes | Supports visible skin rejuvenation and radiance | – |
| Hyaluronic Acid | Delivers hydration and helps skin look plumper | Already in the formula |
| Retinol | Improves the appearance of texture and visible signs of aging | Yes — use retinol at night |
| Vitamin C | Brightens skin and provides antioxidant defense | Yes — use in the morning |
| Niacinamide | Helps improve the appearance of oiliness, visible pores, and uneven tone | Yes — fully compatible |
| PDRN | Supports skin renewal and a glass-glow finish | Yes — complementary |
| AHAs/BHAs | Exfoliate to improve the appearance of texture and congestion | Yes — apply Exosome Glow Serum first |
Still deciding between the big three glow ingredients? We put them head to head in our full breakdown of Vitamin C vs Niacinamide vs Exosomes.
Can You Use Exosomes With Other Actives?
Yes, all of them. This is one of the few actives with no layering restrictions at all.
- With Retinol: Apply Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex first, then retinol. Exosomes support your results while helping keep skin comfortable through retinol use.
- With Vitamin C: A strong morning pairing. Vitamin C defends against daily stressors while the Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex works on visible rejuvenation. Together they are the fastest route to radiance, and a useful combination if you are also working on hyperpigmentation. Try the 15% Vitamin C + EGF Serum ($20).
- With Niacinamide: No conflict, no compromise. Niacinamide helps balance oil and refine the look of pores while the Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex handles glow and hydration.
- With PDRN: Two renewal ingredients that sit happily together. Apply the Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex first on damp skin, then your PDRN Serum ($18).
- With AHAs/BHAs: Apply the Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex first on damp skin, then your exfoliating step. Exosomes help keep skin comfortable while you exfoliate.
- With Hyaluronic Acid: Already in the formula, but if you have dehydrated skin you can layer additional HA on top in the morning for maximum plumpness. The Hyaluronic Acid Serum is $13.
Now that the landscape is clear, here are the two products that actually deliver it.

What to Look for in Exosome Products
Exosomes are a fast-moving category, which means there is a lot of product on the market and not all of it deserves your money. Here is how to judge any exosome product, including ours.
Source Matters
| Source | Verdict for At-Home Skincare |
|---|---|
| Plant-derived | Best choice. Biocompatible, vegan, and clinically validated. |
| Stem cell-derived | Clinic only. Professionally administered, not intended for topical at-home use. |
| Synthetic / lab-grown | An emerging category with limited topical validation to date. |
If a brand will not tell you the source, that is your answer.
Concentration & Delivery
Look for a minimum 1% active exosome complex. Below that, you are paying for a marketing story rather than a functional dose.
Concentration is not the whole picture though. Formula design matters just as much. Look for a lightweight texture that absorbs rather than sitting on the surface, an absence of heavy occlusives that block absorption of everything you layer afterwards, and supporting ingredients chosen to work together rather than assembled to lengthen the ingredient list. A well-built formula at 1% will outperform a badly built one at any concentration.
Serum vs Mask
| Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex - $24 | Exosome Boosting Dry Sheet Masks - $20 | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Daily support for visibly rejuvenated skin | Weekly intensive boost that supports the skin's own exosome activity |
| Frequency | Twice daily, AM and PM | Once a week, or before an event |
| Best for | Building consistent, cumulative results | Instant glow, hydration, and a visible reset |
| Contains exosomes | Yes, 3 million plant-derived exosomes | No, contains OXYGESKIN® |
| What to avoid | Do not overapply — use as directed within your routine | Do not reuse the mask; use on clean skin and follow the recommended weekly frequency |
What to Avoid
| Red Flag | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Unverified claims | If a brand cites a percentage, they should be able to explain the study, sample size, and whether the evidence comes from a clinical or in vitro study. If those details are missing, treat the claim with caution. |
| Heavy occlusive formulas | Thick, waxy textures may reduce the elegant feel of lightweight formulas and may not suit products designed for fast absorption. |
| Fragrance | Fragrance can be a source of irritation for some people and may not be ideal if your goal is to help calm the appearance of stressed skin. |
| No stated source | If the product does not disclose whether its exosomes are plant-derived, stem cell-derived, or synthetic, it is harder to evaluate what type of ingredient you are using. |
Exosome Side Effects & Precautions
Are Exosomes Safe?
Yes, they are safe. Plant-derived topical exosomes are one of the gentlest categories of active skincare available, which is a large part of why we chose them.
The Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex is:
- Fragrance-free
- Alcohol-free
- Paraben-free
- Dermatologically tested
- Clinically tested
- Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive
- Safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Vegan certified by The Vegan Society
It is worth drawing a clear line here. Topical plant-derived exosomes in a serum and invasive clinic exosome treatments are two very different things.
| At-home topical serum | In-clinic exosome treatment | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is applied | Applied from a bottle onto intact skin | Typically delivered via microneedling or injection |
| Who administers it | You, as part of your daily skincare routine | A trained healthcare or aesthetic professional |
| Source typically used | Plant-derived | Often stem cell-derived |
| Regulatory category | Cosmetic product formulated and tested for topical use | Clinical procedure |
Both can be called “exosomes”, but the safety conversation for each is entirely separate, and anyone conflating the two is not being straight with you.
If you have run into claims online that sounded too good to be true, we worked through the most common ones in are exosomes safe: 5 exosome skincare myths debunked.
Potential Side Effects
Side effects are rare. A small number of people experience breakouts when introducing any new product, which is usually a response to a change in routine rather than to a specific ingredient. If you have very sensitive skin or a compromised barrier, introduce it gradually and consider supporting your barrier first with something like the Ectoin Hydro-Barrier Serum ($17) before adding new steps.
Always patch test. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm or behind the ear and wait 24 hours before applying to your face. Here is why you should always patch test, including how to do it properly.
Who Should Seek Medical Advice First
- Anyone using prescription topical medication, particularly prescription retinoids or treatments for a diagnosed skin condition.
- Anyone undergoing microneedling or professional in-clinic treatments. Your practitioner should advise on what to apply and when in your recovery window.
Expert Tips & Pro Advice
Application Technique
Apply to damp skin. Smooth the product across your face and then press it in with your palms rather than rubbing it, which reduces drag and helps absorption. A pea-sized amount is genuinely enough for face and neck. Apply before other serums, every time, because the order is what makes the rest of the routine work harder.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Why It Costs You |
|---|---|
| Applying after heavier serums | Apply Exosome Hydro-Glow Complex before thicker serums so it can absorb effectively. Layering it over heavier products may reduce its effectiveness. |
| Skipping moisturizer | A serum is not a moisturizer. Follow with a moisturizer to help seal in hydration and maximize the up to 12 hours of hydration.** |
| Expecting overnight results | You'll notice an immediate glow, but the clinically measured results are seen at 14 days. Evaluate results after two weeks, not two days. |
| Applying to bone-dry skin | One of the most common application mistakes. Apply to slightly damp skin to help maximize hydration and performance. |
Climate & Lifestyle Considerations
| Situation | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Dry climates and heated interiors | Central heating and air conditioning can leave skin feeling dehydrated. Layer a hydrating serum underneath and follow with a richer moisturizer to help lock in moisture. |
| Humid environments | The lightweight texture works well in humid conditions where heavier products can feel uncomfortable. You may find you need fewer additional hydrating products. |
| Post-travel | Cabin air is extremely dry. Apply to damp skin after landing, and use the Exosome Boosting Dry Sheet Mask that evening if you want to look refreshed the next day. |
| Pre-event | Complete your full at-home exosome facial the evening before, rather than the morning of the event, to allow skin time to settle and look its best. |
How Long Until You See Results?
This last point is worth noting: consistency matters more than quantity. Twice a day at a pea-sized amount for a month will outperform triple the product used sporadically, every single time.
*4-week clinical study of 26 people
| When | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| First use | An immediate glow with a plumper, more hydrated look. Skin feels comfortable rather than sticky and sits well under makeup straight away. |
| Day 7 | Hydration feels more consistent throughout the day. Skin looks calmer, with less visible redness and puffiness after stressful days, late nights, or travel. |
| 14 days | Clinic-worthy rejuvenated skin in 14 days. This is where the 6-in-1 clinical results become visible: radiance, hydration, tone, firmness, elasticity, and texture.* |

The Science Behind Our Formulas
We build skincare that earns its claims. That means real data, disclosed study sizes, and no buzzwords standing in for evidence. If we cannot substantiate something, we do not say it, and if the data comes from in-vitro testing rather than a clinical study on people, we tell you which is which.

Ready To Transform Your Skin?
Exosomes are not a trend. They are the next chapter of skincare science, and the meaningful thing INKEY has done is make them accessible rather than aspirational. 3 million plant-derived exosomes per bottle. Clinic worthy rejuvenated skin in 14 days*.
Featured in Vogue, The Independent, Sheerluxe, Glamour, and Marie Claire. Rated 4.5 stars by nearly 1,000 customers. And it costs $24.
You do not need a clinic and you do not need needles. You need a formula that is proven to work and priced so you can actually keep using it, because consistency is what produces the 14 day result, and consistency is a lot easier when the bottle does not cost more than your weekly grocery shop. If you want the fuller story of how exosomes went from clinic treatments to your bathroom shelf, it is worth a read.
Start with the serum. It is the daily habit that builds the result. Add the masks when you want the ten minute reset, before an event, after a flight, or on the Sunday night when you want Monday to go better.
