Your skin's acid mantle is its first line of defense — here's how to protect it.

What is your acid mantle?

Your skin is covered by a thin, slightly acidic film called the acid mantle — a mix of sweat, natural oils and fatty acids. It's your skin's first line of defense, and most people have never heard of it.

It helps skin hold onto water, keeps your microbiome balanced, and makes it harder for irritants and unwanted bacteria to take hold. It works alongside your skin barrier as the outermost layer of that defense system.

What is skin pH?

The pH scale runs 1 to 14: 1–6 acidic, 7 neutral, 8–14 alkaline.

Healthy skin isn't neutral. It sits at roughly pH 4.7 to 5.75 — usually quoted as around 5.5. That acidity is what makes the acid mantle work.

When pH climbs, the mantle is compromised, the barrier beneath struggles, and skin gets tight, red or dehydrated.

What damages your acid mantle?

Cleansing. The biggest culprit. Traditional bar soap sits at pH 9 or 10. That "squeaky clean" feeling is your acid mantle being stripped away.

Water. Tap water is around pH 7; hard water runs higher.

Over-exfoliating. Acids have their place, but too much too often doesn't let skin recover.

Environment. Pollution, sun exposure and seasonal shifts all add up.

Your skin itself. Oily skin and sensitive skin sit at different points, and pH shifts with age.

Skin self-corrects — but slowly. Every time you strip it, there's a window where it's vulnerable.

Signs your acid mantle is compromised

Tightness after washing. Redness or stinging when you apply products. Flaking alongside oiliness. Sudden reactions to products that were previously fine. Breakouts that won't respond to your usual routine.

None of these only mean pH — but several appearing after a new cleanser is a strong clue.

How to choose a pH balanced cleanser

This is where you have the most control. Look for a cleanser formulated close to skin's own pH, and keep traditional soap off your face. If skin feels tight afterward, it's too harsh — no exceptions.

Glycerin Gentle Purifying Cleanser — $19
A gentle gel cleanser leaving skin cleansed, balanced and fresh rather than stripped. Glycerin pulls moisture in while it cleanses.

Oat Cleansing Balm — $17
For makeup and SPF. Melts everything in 30 seconds without scrubbing, and it's National Eczema Association Accepted. Pair them for a double cleanse.

Rebuilding after cleansing

What about acids?

Acids aren't the enemy — they're formulated at low pH on purpose, because that's how they work. The issue is frequency, not existence.

If your skin is already struggling, PHAs are gentlest. The PHA Toner ($18) exfoliates while hydrating — a sensible entry point for sensitive skin.
