Ceramide NP is the ceramide you'll spot on almost every ingredients label - here's what it actually is, what it does for your skin barrier, and how much of it you really need.

What is Ceramide NP?
Ceramide NP is a specific type of ceramide used in skincare, and it is the same ingredient that older products and older articles list as Ceramide 3. If you have turned a moisturizer over and found “Ceramide NP” somewhere in the small print, that is what you are looking at: a single, well-defined lipid, not a vague category or a marketing term.
It appears on your ingredients list under its INCI name. INCI stands for the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, and it is the naming system that cosmetic brands are legally required to use on packaging. It exists so that the same ingredient is called the same thing on every product in every country, regardless of what the front of the bottle says.
That system is also where our name comes from. INKEY is named after the INCI list, because we started from a simple position: you should be able to read what is in your skincare and understand what it is doing. Decoding ingredient names is not a side project for us. It is the reason the brand exists.

It decodes Ceramide NP itself: what the letters actually mean, what the ingredient is made from, why it used to be called Ceramide 3, where it sits on a label and whether that position matters, how much of it you genuinely need, which skin types it suits, and how to use it on your face, your eyes and your neck.

Now that the definition is settled, the most useful place to start is with the name itself, because those two letters are doing more work than most people realize.
What Does NP Stand For in Ceramide NP?
NP stands for N-acylated Phytosphingosine. That is the whole answer, and everything else in this section is about making those three words mean something.
Break it into its two halves. The P refers to phytosphingosine, which is the backbone of the molecule. Think of it as the structural spine that everything else attaches to. The N refers to how the fatty acid is joined onto that spine, specifically an N-acyl link, which is a bond formed at the nitrogen atom on the backbone. Put them together and you have a fatty acid attached to a phytosphingosine base. That is a ceramide.
N = N-acylated
P = Phytosphingosine
The important thing to understand is that these letters are structural codes, not branding. In the modern ceramide naming convention, the first letter describes the type of fatty acid attached to the molecule and the second letter describes the type of sphingoid base it is attached to. That is why the system scales. Change the base and you change the second letter. Change the fatty acid and you change the first. The name is a compressed description of the chemistry.
This has a practical consequence that is genuinely useful when you are comparing products. Because INCI naming is a legal requirement, every single brand using this exact ingredient has to list it the same way. There is no premium spelling. There is no proprietary alternative name that means something better. If two products both contain this ingredient, both labels will say Ceramide NP. What differs between them is not the name but the concentration, the formulation around it and whether anyone has bothered to test the finished product.
That is also the point of the INCI list generally, and the reason we took our name from it. The front of a package is marketing. The ingredients list is regulated. Learning to read the second one is the single most reliable skincare skill you can develop.
One more thing worth knowing: Ceramide NP is one of the ceramide types your own skin produces naturally. Your stratum corneum, the outermost layer of your skin, is built from a mix of lipids that includes several different ceramide species, and NP is among them. That matters because it means applying it topically is not introducing something foreign. You are supplementing a lipid your skin already recognizes and already uses structurally.
You will also see other ceramides on labels, including Ceramide AP and Ceramide EOP, which follow exactly the same letter logic with different fatty acids and different bases. With the current name decoded, there is one more naming question that trips people up constantly, and it comes from the older name that is still floating around.
Ceramide NP and Ceramide 3 Are the Same Ingredient
Let us be completely direct about this, because it causes more label confusion than almost anything else in the ceramide category.
Ceramide 3 is the former INCI name. It was replaced by Ceramide NP. It is the same ingredient. Nothing about the molecule changed. Only the naming system did.
If you see Ceramide 3 on a label, you are looking at Ceramide NP under its old name.
The reason for the change is straightforward once you know the two systems. The original approach numbered ceramides sequentially, which produced names like Ceramide 1, Ceramide 2 and Ceramide 3. Those numbers told you nothing about the molecule. They were essentially arbitrary labels, and as more ceramide species were identified and characterized, a numbered list became increasingly unhelpful. The industry moved to the structural letter-code system described in the section above, where the name itself tells a chemist what the molecule is made of. Ceramide 3 became Ceramide NP, and the new name carries actual information.
This is documented in the Safety Assessment of Ceramides as Used in Cosmetics published by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, the independent panel that assesses the safety of cosmetic ingredients. The assessment states plainly that Ceramide 3 will be replaced by Ceramide NP, and it defines the NP designation in terms of N-acylated phytosphingosine. If you want a single authoritative source for the name change, that is it.
You can verify the same thing through official ingredient identity records. The FDA UNII database entry for Ceramide NP lists Ceramide 3 as a recognized synonym for the substance. UNII records exist to give every substance a single unambiguous identifier, so a synonym listing there is about as definitive as ingredient identity gets.
So what does this mean when you are actually standing there comparing two products?
- Older packaging may still say Ceramide 3. Formulas and packaging artwork get updated on long cycles. A product produced before the naming transition, or one that has not had a packaging refresh, may still carry the older name.
- Older articles and reviews will say Ceramide 3. A lot of the skincare writing that ranks well online predates the change. If you are reading a piece from several years ago praising Ceramide 3, it is describing the ingredient you now know as Ceramide NP.
- One product listing Ceramide 3 and another listing Ceramide NP are not offering you different ingredients. They are offering you the same ingredient with different vintages of labeling. Judge them on concentration, formulation and evidence, not on which name is printed.
- Neither name is superior. Ceramide NP is simply the current correct INCI name. Seeing it is a sign the label is up to date, nothing more.

What is Ceramide NP Made Of and Where Does It Come From?
Ceramide NP is a lipid. Structurally, it is a phytosphingosine backbone with a fatty acid attached to it, which is exactly what the name told us. That is the entire molecule. It is not a complex or a blend or an extract. It is one defined compound.
Your skin makes ceramides on its own, continuously, as part of building and maintaining the stratum corneum. Ceramides sit alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids in the lipid matrix that fills the space between your skin cells, and Ceramide NP is one of the types your skin produces. This is why the sourcing question matters less for compatibility than people expect and more for ethics than they realize. The molecule your skin makes and the molecule in a well-formulated product are the same molecule.
Where it comes from is a fair question, and historically it is a reasonable one to ask, because ceramides can be obtained in several different ways. The Ceramide NP used across our Bio-Active range is plant-derived, not animal-derived. It is produced through a controlled process rather than extracted from animal tissue.
There are real, practical advantages to a plant-derived, lab-produced ingredient beyond the ethical one:
- Consistency. Every batch is the same. You are not at the mercy of seasonal or biological variation in a raw source.
- Purity. A controlled production process means a defined, well-characterized ingredient without unpredictable contaminants.
- No animal-derived inputs. Which is what makes the certifications below possible.

The plant-derived route is not a compromise on performance either, and there is published research on this specific point. A 2022 study on plant-derived Ceramide NPs examined ceramide NPs built from plant seed oils and found they accelerated skin barrier recovery and improved stratum corneum cohesion in human testing, with the researchers noting that plant-oil-derived versions can more closely mirror the fatty acid diversity found in human skin ceramides. None of this means every ceramide product is equal, and it definitely does not mean that having the ingredient on the label is enough. Which brings us to the question people ask the moment they find Ceramide NP on an ingredients list and notice how far down it is.
Where Ceramide NP Sits on an Ingredients List and How Much You Need
Here is the misreading we see more than any other, and it is worth correcting properly, because it causes people to dismiss good formulas and overvalue weak ones.
INCI lists are ordered by concentration, in descending order, but only down to 1%. Once an ingredient is present at less than 1% of the formula, it can be listed in any order the brand chooses. That is the rule. It means the top of an ingredients list is genuinely informative, and the bottom half of it is far less so than most people assume.
So when you find an ingredient sitting near the end of a list, below the preservative, you have not discovered a scandal. You have discovered that it is used at under 1%. Whether that is a problem depends entirely on what the ingredient is and how much of it is actually needed to work.
Use our own product as the worked example, because we would rather show you than ask you to trust us. On the Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturizer, Ceramide NP appears in the second half of the ingredients list, after the preservative. That is expected. That is correct. It is exactly where an ingredient used at 0.2% belongs.
With ceramides, more is not automatically better. This is the part that gets lost. There is a persistent assumption that a higher percentage means a stronger product, borrowed from the way people think about acids and vitamin C. Ceramides do not work like that. They are structural lipids that slot into an existing lipid matrix. What matters is not loading in as much as possible. What matters is whether the concentration in the bottle is the concentration that was actually tested and shown to do something.

The reason barrier lipids matter for hydration at all comes down to water loss. A barrier that is well supplied with lipids holds water in more effectively than one that is depleted. We have covered the mechanism in detail in our guide to how skin loses moisture, so we will not repeat it here.
Independent research points the same direction on this specific ceramide. A human study by Lim et al on a lipid mixture enriched by Ceramide NP found that skin treated with the Ceramide NP-enriched mixture showed significantly better barrier recovery, better stratum corneum integrity and greater hydration than skin treated with the vehicle alone. Notably, the researchers concluded that the specific ceramide subtype and the diversity of fatty acid chain lengths both mattered to the outcome, which is another way of saying that formulation quality is not a detail.
So the takeaway on label position is this. Do not read the bottom of an ingredients list as a ranking of importance. Read the top of the list to understand the base of the formula, then look for whether the brand has told you the concentration of the actives and whether that concentration has been tested. A brand that will not tell you the percentage is asking you to take the position on the list as evidence. It is not evidence, in either direction.

Concentration settled, the next question is a personal one: whether this particular ingredient is right for the skin you actually have.
Is Ceramide NP Good for Your Skin Type?
The short answer is that Ceramide NP is one of the most broadly suitable ingredients in skincare, because it is not an active in the conventional sense. It does not exfoliate, it does not resurface and it does not require your skin to adjust to it. It replenishes a lipid your barrier is built from. That makes the suitability question less about whether you can tolerate it and more about how much difference you are likely to notice.

Dry skin
This is the most direct fit. Dryness is, at its simplest, a shortage of lipids and a resulting difficulty holding onto water. Ceramide NP addresses that at a structural level rather than only sitting on the surface as an occlusive layer. You are replacing something your barrier is short of, using a lipid your skin already produces. Of all the skin types, this is the one where the ingredient is doing the most obvious job.
Sensitive and reactive skin
A great deal of what presents as sensitivity is a barrier that is not holding up. When the lipid matrix is compromised, irritants penetrate more easily and skin reacts to things it would otherwise tolerate. Supporting barrier function often reduces that reactivity over time. Eczema-prone skin
There is a long-established body of research here. The foundational work by Imokawa et al found markedly reduced ceramide levels in the stratum corneum of atopic skin, including in areas that looked unaffected, and proposed ceramide deficiency as a factor in atopic dry skin. That finding is a large part of why ceramide-containing formulas are so commonly suggested for eczema-prone skin. To be clear about scope: skincare is cosmetic, not medical. Oily and combination skin
Yes, and this is the objection we hear most, so let us take it seriously rather than waving it away. The assumption is that if your skin already produces plenty of oil, adding lipids is the last thing you need. But oil and hydration are two different things. Sebum is not the same as the ceramide-cholesterol-fatty acid matrix that holds water in your barrier, and it is entirely possible to be oily and dehydrated at the same time. Plenty of people are. Natural ceramide production slows down as skin ages. According to the Cleveland Clinic, ceramides make up roughly half of the lipids in the epidermis, and aging skin replenishes them more slowly than younger skin does. Stressed or easily irritated skin
